The Difference Between Texas Rangers, State Troopers, and Police Officers

Unless you’re in the law enforcement industry yourself, it can be difficult to know all the slight differentiations between the job titles, and also all the varied jobs of law enforcement there are in different states, countries, and communities. The uniforms of various law enforcement officials have slight differences, which indicates what role they fill, though these are often small details. Learn the differences between the different law enforcement titles and you’ll be able to better understand how law enforcement works throughout the United States.

Police Officers

Most towns and cities have a police force and the police officers that work on that force are general law enforcement officials. They can also be employed by a county, state, college, or governmental organization that has the power to have their own law enforcement, separate from the community around them. Places, such as colleges or hospitals, often have security staffs, but these employees are not full-fledged police officers. In D.C., most federal government agencies have their own private police forces that patrol the properties of these bureaus and enforce laws.

State Troopers

A law enforcement official at the state level is usually referred to as a “trooper”, except in California. State troopers are often responsible for patrolling highways and are members of the highway patrol or state police agency. State troopers also keep a watch on small communities that lack their own law enforcement, responding to calls that come into the 911 dispatch.

Texas Rangers

Rangers are state-level officials and this type of law enforcement official is only found in Texas. The Texas Rangers are at the top of the law enforcement pyramid in Texas and have a rich history, holding the title of the oldest law enforcement group in the country. The original Texas Rangers wore gold or silver stars and worked to protect the state of Texas during turbulent times. It’s a prestigious position and is an integral part of Old West tradition of the United States and remains revered to this day.
